LGBTQIA+

The LGBTQIA+ community is a broad collective noun for people with various sexual orientations, gender identities, and sex characteristics that do not always fall within the classic hetero/man-woman norms.

Lesbian / lesbisch
A woman who is attracted to women.

G = Gay / homosexual
Usually a man who is attracted to men. Sometimes also used more broadly for homosexual people.

B = Bisexual
Someone who can be attracted to more than one gender.

T = Transgender
A person whose gender identity does not correspond with the sex assigned at birth.

Q = Queer / Questioning
Queer is a broad term for people who fall outside traditional boxes. Questioning means someone is still exploring their identity or orientation.

I = Intersex
Someone born with physical sex characteristics that do not fit entirely within the typical definitions of male or female.

A = Asexual / aromantic / agender
Asexual: little or no sexual attraction.
Aromantic: little or no romantic attraction.
Agender: Someone who does not identify with a gender, or identifies with it very little.

+ = Plus
Space for other identities and experiences not explicitly listed in the acronym.

Trans woman
Someone registered as male at birth, but who is female.

Trans man
Someone who was registered as female at birth, but is a man.

Non-binary
Someone who doesn't exclusively feel male or female.

Genderqueer
Someone who breaks traditional gender norms or falls outside of those confines.

Agender
Someone who feels little to no connection to a gender.

Genderfluid
Someone whose gender identity can change.

Crossdresser / transvestite
Someone who dresses in clothing that is culturally associated with another gender.

  • Coming out of the closet: (in Dutch “uit de kast komen”) refers to the process that LGBTQ people go through as they attempt to accept their sexual orientation or gender identity and share that identity.
    In contrast:
  • Outing: is when someone reveals an LGBTQ+ person's sexual orientation or gender identity without their consent

Changing clothes: as a crossdresser, we're going to get dressed as our alter ego.
Dressing up: To dress up (as) means to disguise oneself as, usually used by us during carnival.

Sexual orientation = who someone is attracted to.
Gender identity = who someone is.
Gender expression = how someone presents themselves.
